School of Business Faculty Involvement in Academic Advisement

                                                                                        

Though Business faculty are not assigned advisees, faculty member are involved in the advisement process in a number of ways including the First Year Student Mentoring program, New Student Orientation, Group Advisement and Career Consultation.

First Year Student Mentoring Program

Each semester faculty members are assigned one-three first year students and serves as a mentor.  Responsibilities include contact the students periodically throughout the semester to discuss college adjustment issues, academic success strategies, campus resources and student involvement.

New Student Orientation

Faculty are required to assist professional advisors a minimum of three orientation sessions throughout the academic year.  During orientation faculty assist student with course selection, registration and academic planning.

Training for Faculty Advisors includes a School of Business pre-advisement session and a campus wide Pre-Advisement session.  The School of Business pre-advisement session covers school specific information including:

§  New Student Requirements including On-Campus Housing and First Year Program Requirements

Group Advisement:

Once a semester Professional Advisors work with faculty members teaching upper class business courses to utilize one class session for advising purposes. Faculty will assist Advisors in discussing the following with upper class students:

§  Graduation Requirements, Application Process and Evaluations

§  Developing a plan for graduation

§  Course Sequencing

§  Developing a Plan for Graduation

§  Two Year Schedule

§  Internship

Career Advisement

Business faculty serve as a referral agent for professional advisors when students have specific questions regarding majors, career opportunities and job search strategies. Faculty assists the Career Advisor in developing resources for students that specifically address major/field related opportunities.  Faculty also assist students with obtaining internships and serves as coordinators for the internship class/es.  The role of the faculty coordinator includes:

§  Assisting students in developing learning objectives

§  Set up additional learning opportunities and assignments for the class

§  Perform site visits

§  Communicate with site supervisor regarding student’s performance

§  Assign grade for class

§  Discuss internships as related to student’s career path
